Operating Cost Per Surgery Per Day (OCPSPD)

Check whether your associates are covering the cost of their chair

Operating cost per surgery per day (commonly referred to as OCPSPD) is a metric for measuring the profitability of your clinic at the practitioner level. You can view your clinic's operating costs, and practitioner coverage of those costs, on Medfin's OCPSPD page.

It's calculated as follows:

OCPSPD = Total Clinic Operating Costs ÷ Active Surgery Days

Let's break this down.

Total Clinic Operating Costs

Your operating costs are the day-to-day costs of running the clinic. This usually includes premises costs, staff, and administrative costs, among others. Medfin can pull this figure from two places: your accounting software, or manually-entered cost figures.

Operating Costs from Accounting Software

If you have your accounting software connected to Medfin, the platform will use operating costs from reconciled transactions in said software. For these numbers to be accurate, you will need to configure your accounting categories on Medfin. You can read more about that here.

Manual Operating Cost Overrides

If your accounting software is not connected to Medfin, or you'd like to provide your own operating cost figures for any reason, you can do so via the OCPSPD page or the Profitability Settings page.

Enter an operating cost value, then the period to which that value applies. Medfin will split the value across the selected months.

Active Surgery Days

Your active surgery day count is the estimated number of days you had surgeries open in the clinic. The number of estimated active surgeries per day is capped at the surgery count of your practice, and is estimated by looking at the number of dentists working on any given day.

For example, if you have 5 surgeries, but only 3 dentists are working, Medfin will calculate using 3 active surgery days for that day. If you have 6 dentists working (e.g. if two dentists work half-days), then Medfin will assume 5 active surgery days for that day.

Your clinic's surgery count can be configured via the OCPSPD page.
